What is Accessibility and Usability? The basic principles are that every site should be accessible, meaning the navigation of a site can be easily accessed from any device, not just mobile phones and pda's, but also screen readers for visually impaired users. Usability means that a site should have clear text, easy navigation and unambiguous forms.
Accessibility issues are referenced under the Web Accessibility Initiative as defined by the W3C. Essentially as Web Designers we are responsible for ensuring the sites we design meet the specifications laid out. Various technologies exist for us to achieve building a website which is both Accessible and Usable, including XHTML, CSS and Javascript. By building websites using these technologies correctly we can ensure your website reaches the widest possible audience.
XHTML is new markup language using elements of XML and subsequently succeeding the standard HTML. Refinement of XHTML is ongoing and may be considered by many to be the "current version" of HTML, but it is in fact a separate, parallel standard.
All of our pages are "styled" using CSS technology. A Cascading Style Sheet allows us to change the appearance of a web page without modifying the base code of the page itself.
Javascript is a scripting language commonly used in websites to provide dynamic content and provide additional functionality.
By using all of these technologies for web development and design our websites remain at the forefront of latest web technologies, making them accessible and usable from many different browsers (including those on cell phones and pda's) whilst allowing them to be updated quickly and efficiently.
